In a world that often praises only big achievements, it’s easy to overlook the small steps that move us forward—especially when life feels hard or progress is slow. But research in positive psychology shows that celebrating small wins can have a powerful impact on our mental health, self-esteem, and resilience. As we approach Thanksgiving, let’s take time to practice gratitude not just for what’s perfect, but for every bit of growth along the way.

Why Small Wins Matter

Small wins are the everyday moments of progress: getting out of bed on a tough day, finishing a task you’ve been avoiding, reaching out to a friend, or taking a mindful breath when you’re stressed. These achievements may seem minor, but they’re actually the building blocks of lasting change.

Celebrating small wins:

  • Boosts motivation and confidence
  • Helps build self-esteem, especially for children and teens
  • Creates positive momentum, making big goals feel more manageable

How to Recognize and Celebrate Small Wins

For Parents and Families:

  • Name the effort, not just the outcome.
    “I noticed how hard you worked on your homework tonight.”
    “You took a deep breath instead of yelling—great job using your coping skills!”
  • Celebrate progress, even if it’s not perfect.
    “We argued, but we also found a way to reconnect.”
  • Make it a family ritual.
    At dinner or bedtime, ask: “What’s one small win from today?”

For Individuals:

  • Keep a “small wins” journal or note on your phone. Jot down moments of progress, no matter how tiny.
  • Share your wins with a friend, therapist, or support group. Let others cheer you on.
  • Reward yourself with a little self-care—time outside, a favorite snack, or a few minutes of music.

For Children and Teens:

  • Use stickers, high-fives, or simple praise to acknowledge effort and growth.
  • Help them set small, achievable goals and celebrate each step forward.
